For the first time in the program, Ukrainians will be able to get a cancer medicine for free

In 2025, the Government of Ukraine announced a large -scale updating of the state program "Available Medicines", which allows citizens to receive vital drugs for free or with partial pay. Extension will engage new categories of patients, including pregnant women and cancer patients. This was reported at the Ministry of Health and the National Health Service of Ukraine (NSAU).

Dozens of drugs used to treat the most common diseases among Ukrainians will be added to the program. In particular, for the first time, the program will provide access to medicines for pregnant women and patients with cancer diagnoses.

Since August 2025, the program will have drugs designed for the prevention and treatment of anemia during pregnancy. The Ministry of Health notes that anemia is one of the most common complications in pregnant women, which can be a threat to both the mother and the baby.

The list will include:

  • Divoric iron (tablets, solutions, syrups) - necessary for the normal level of hemoglobin;

  • Folic acids A is a key element in preventing birth defects.

For patients with chronic heart and blood vessels, the list was added:

  • Indapamide and torasemide are diuretics that reduce blood pressure and fight swelling;

  • Methyldopa is a drug that is widely used for the treatment of hypertension, especially in pregnant women.

The most anticipated update will be the inclusion in the program for the treatment of cancer. Since October 2025, Ukrainians undergoing hormone therapy for breast cancer will be able to obtain the following medicines:

  • Expensive,

  • Letrozole,

  • Tamoxifen.

These drugs are basic in the treatment of breast cancer and are widely used worldwide. Their inclusion in "available medicines" is an important step in the struggle for the lives of thousands of Ukrainian women.

According to representatives of the Ministry of Health, in 2025, more than UAH 6 billion is provided for the Affordable Medicines Program - a record amount in the history of the initiative. It is expected that thanks to these funds, the program will cover more than 500,000 patients across the country.

In addition, since July 2025, a mandatory connection of all pharmacies to the program through a contract with the NSAU is introduced in Ukraine. This will allow Ukrainians to receive prescription medicines in any settlement, regardless of pharmacy ownership.

To get the medicine, the patient needs:

  1. Consult a family doctor or other specialist who will write an electronic prescription;

  2. Get a recipe with QR code;

  3. Find the nearest pharmacy working with the program;

  4. Provide a pharmacist prescription and get medicine for free or with partial pay.

Information about available drugs, drugstore pharmacies and a list of diagnoses that are subject to the program can be found at the NSAU and MOH sites.
