According to Politico, European aluminum producers, together with the support of four European Union countries, urge the EU to introduce embargo on metal imports from Russia as part of a new package of sanctions against Russia.
According to the publication, this initiative is aimed at combating high energy prices and cheap foreign competition, in particular from Russian manufacturers. European companies that produce aluminum hope that sanctions against Russia will help to alleviate their situation.
The EU Aluminum Association calls on Brussels to completely prohibit aluminum imports from Russia, arguing that they have already quickly adapted to new market conditions.
However, EU diplomats, according to Politico, express doubts that the full embargo on aluminum from Russia will be introduced by February 24. According to them, the proposal from Lithuania, Estonia, Latvia and Poland is likely to face the opposition by industrial countries such as Italy, which is respectively, can lead to prices.
It is also worth noting that European industrial consumers oppose aluminum sanctions. The EU Face's industrial consumers group believes that such sanctions can become an "economic tactical nuclear bomb" and has previously expressed their reservations on this issue.
