The average pension in Ukraine increased 122 times over 30 years, but in the currency equivalent of growth was much smaller - only 5.6 times, which is due to the fluctuations in the hryvnia.
About it reports the Pension Fund of Ukraine (PFU), providing data on the increase in the average pension in the country.
Since the beginning of 2025, the average pension in Ukraine has increased by 552 hryvnia or 9.5%, which led to the fact that it amounted to UAH 6,341. This increase occurred against the background of a reduction in the official dollar by 1.4%, which helped to increase the pension in the currency equivalent. As a result, the average pension in dollars increased by $ 15, reaching $ 153. According to data from 1996 to 2018, collected by the State Statistics Committee, as well as from the last years from the Pension Fund, in 1997 the average pension was only 52 hryvnia. Thus, by April 2025, it increased 122 times and reached 6,341 hryvnia.
However, the dollar has increased 22 times during this time - from 1.9 UAH per dollar to 41.5 hryvnias per dollar. This contributed to the fact that the dollar equivalent pension increased only 5.6 times - from $ 27 in 1997 to $ 153 in 2025. The greatest increase in pensions in Ukraine was observed in 2004, when their size almost doubled - from $ 34 to $ 60. However, with the outbreak of Russia against Ukraine in 2014, pensions decreased sharply - from $ 191 to $ 100. After the start of a full -scale invasion of Russia in 2022, the pensions almost did not change, although their size still increased slightly.
The increase in pensions against the background of inflation and devaluation of the hryvnia is certainly important, however, according to experts, a significant reduction in the purchasing power of Ukrainian pensioners is a serious problem for the country's pension system. Despite the increase in the size of pensions in UAH, the change in the value of the currency makes this increase less tangible in the real life of people who receive pensions.
