How the main dishes of the festive table have become more expensive

Scientists of the Institute of Agrarian Economics estimated that the average account for the traditional Christmas table in 2024 increased by 41% compared to last year and amounted to about UAH 1365. The increase in cost is caused by an increase in food prices, especially vegetables, fruits, meat and other key ingredients of holiday dishes.

Roasted fish took first place. For 2 kg of carp together with flour will have to pay more than 300 UAH. Kutia is one of the main Christmas dishes, also has a high cost. For a traditional recipe of 950 grams of products, about 175 UAH should be paid. Mac, nuts, raisins and wheat are most affected by its price. Borsch with beans became the third most expensive dish. Its price increases because of the high cost of beans and vegetables such as beets, cabbage, carrots and potatoes. Vinogret is a popular salad where salty cucumbers and potatoes are formed. Cabbage stew is also in the list of expensive dishes, especially through the addition of mushrooms. The stew, which uses dried fruits sets, will cost about 105 UAH for 600 grams. Pickle (sauerkraut, salted cucumbers) and fresh vegetables (cucumbers, tomatoes) complement the festive table, increasing the overall budget.

Experts explain the increase in the cost of the holiday table with rising prices for basic food. Particularly noticeable rise in price of vegetables, fruits, meat and nuts, which are key ingredients of many dishes.

Despite the rise in prices, Ukrainians continue to adhere to Christmas traditions, creating a rich table for family celebration.
