How to run a car in frost

Winter frosts can be a real test for car engines. The battery battery suffers the most as low temperature reduces its charge. Therefore, it is important to properly prepare the car for starting in frost to avoid unpleasant situations.

If you have not used the car for a long time and the battery is discharged, it is best to remove it from the car and bring it in heat at night. This will allow the battery to charge and reduce the effects of low temperature.

It is recommended to warm it up before running the car. If you have the opportunity, make a 30-minute trip in the evening before leaving the car overnight. Do not use powerful appliances such as seat heating so that the battery can be charged.

If your car does not get in the cold, try checking the spark plugs. They may be contaminated or gathered by derivation, which prevents the engine from running.

Also keep in mind that the winter can be affected by a thickened oil in winter, especially if it is not changed for a long time.

  • Turn off all electrical appliances. This will help reduce the load on the battery, which is important in cold weather.
  • Wait a few seconds after you turn on the heating. This will allow the battery to stabilize the voltage.
  • Do not twist the starter for more than 10 seconds. If the car does not start with the first attempt, pause for 1-2 minutes and try again. More prolonged attempts can damage the starter.
  • For a car with a mechanical gearbox: Press the clutch before starting and hold the pedal for 2-3 seconds after starting the engine. This will help keep the transmission and start the engine lighter.
  • If you want to heat the engine: do not rush to move in severe frost. Allow the car for a few minutes to warm up to the usual idle speed.
