What infections can be transmitted through saliva

A kiss is not only a manifestation of tenderness and closeness between partners, but also the possibility for some infections to enter the body. Although this is not always the cause of the disease, doctors identify several diseases that can be picked up through saliva when kissing.

Syphilis is one of the few diseases that are likely to be infected through a kiss if there are ulcers on the mucous membranes that can damage cells and promote infection into the body. Syphilis virus can be transmitted during close contact with open wounds on the lips. Herpes is another infection that is often transmitted when kissing, especially if there are characteristic watery bubbles on the lips that indicate the active phase of the disease. This is one of the most common diseases transmitted through saliva. Mononucleosis (or "kissing disease") is an infection caused by the Epstein-Barr virus transmitted through saliva. A person infected with mononucleosis may experience symptoms similar to angina, including fever, sore throat and general weakness. Cytomegalovirus is another infection that can be picked up through a kiss. With weakened immunity, it can lead to serious health problems, including chronic diseases. Human papilloma virus (HPV) - although mainly this virus is transmitted through sexual contact, its strains can also enter the body when kissing. HPV can cause benign neoplasms on the mucous membranes. Helicobacter pylori is a bacterium that can be transmitted through saliva and cause gastritis or bowel problems. Hepatitis A - this type of hepatitis can be transmitted through saliva, as well as contact with the things of the infected person. Hepatitis A causes serious liver problems.

Despite many possible infections, there are those that are not transmitted through a kiss. In particular, HIV is not transmitted through saliva, and there is no confirmation that a kiss can be infected with gonorrhea. With regard to hepatitis B and C, although there is a theoretical probability of transmitting these diseases due to saliva, such cases have been recorded very little, not to say that they are not actually occurring. Given the many possible risks, it is important to be careful if you or your partner have symptoms of diseases that can be transmitted through saliva. The presence of herpes, ulcers on the lips, sore throat or other signs of infection can be a signal that should be avoided kisses.

Protect your health and health of loved ones, given the possible risks, and remember that a kiss is not only tenderness, but also a potential path for some infections.
