European Union leaders intend to send a "clear signal" to the US President Donald Trump, confirming their unconditional support to Ukraine. According to the document, at the beginning of negotiations in Brussels, leaders will meet with President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and will once again confirm their "unwavering commitment" to support Ukraine, stating that the EU is ready to stand near Kiev "as long as it will take."
This decision was made against Trump repeated statements, which called for the early termination of the war in Ukraine. In particular, on December 16, he stated that Zelensky should be ready to reach a peace agreement with Vladimir Putin, not specifying whether this is a concession. The EU in its project, the conclusions clearly states that "Russia should not take a hill" and emphasizes that no initiative for Ukraine can be implemented without the participation of Kiev.
EU diplomats described this project as a "clear signal" for the US. During lunch, leaders will also discuss transatlantic relations and fears about the potential trade war between the EU and the US. The EU aims to emphasize its importance as the second largest US trading partner and a reliable ally.
The possibility of proposals for the purchase of more US liquefied natural gas (LNG) or weapons will be discussed separately, as Trump has expressed concern about the US trade deficit.
