The EU convenes a summit to strengthen defense

The leaders of the member states of the European Union will gather on February 3 for an informal summit near Brussels, dedicated to strengthening the European defense. The invitation to the summit was sent by the head of the European Council, Antonio Costa.

The main purpose of the meeting will be to discuss ways to increase the EU's defense capability, prepare recommendations for the European Commission and the High Representative on creating a "white book" on the future of European defense, as well as define directions for making strategic decisions at the next meetings of the European Council, in particular in June 2025.

According to Koshta, Europe should strengthen its own responsibility for defense:

  1. Investments in defense. Summit participants will consider the need for additional funds to ensure the operational readiness of the EU.
  2. Cooperation between countries. The heads of state will discuss opportunities for closer cooperation to avoid duplication, reduce costs and ensure long-term stability.
  3. Development of new technologies. Investments in research and development are a priority to strengthen joint defense capabilities.

Kosta emphasized that effective defense is a "common good" that benefits all Europeans and requires coordinated efforts that cannot be implemented at the level of individual countries.

European leaders will determine the key areas of defense development, laying the foundation for more coordinated and effective cooperation. Also, the results of the summit will be an important stage in the preparation for the June meeting of the European Council, where more specific decisions can be made.
