The chairman of European diplomacy, Josep Borrel, called on European countries to be ready for further support of Ukraine in the context of possible reduction of assistance of the United States. At a meeting of the European Socialist Party Congress in Malaga, Borrel emphasized that he did not expect a rapid victory over Russia in the near future. He urged Europe to prepare for long conflict and uncertainty.
The diplomat also emphasized the history of Ukrainian resistance and support provided by the Western countries. Earlier, the European Union provided a considerable military and economic assistance package to Ukraine, but now Borrel believes that Ukraine may be the next step.
He stressed that the European community is not a military alliance, but the greatest security guarantee for Ukraine is the ability to join it to the European family. This step will require Europe's unity and readiness to further support Ukraine in overcoming the Russian military aggression.
In addition, Borrel expressed fears that the war between Israel and Hamas may affect Ukraine's international support. These cards arise from the fact that the situation in the Middle East can distract attention and resources designed to support Ukraine in the fight against military aggression of the Russian Federation.
