The countries of the European Union are actively increasing the production of ammunition and planning to reach the level of release by 2025, which will be competitive compared to Russia. According to the French edition of La Tribune, the EU Commissioner on Internal Market, Tierry Breton said that the production of artillery ammunition in Europe has increased rapidly, already exceeding the United States.
"In March 2023, we produced 500,000 shells in Europe and have already ahead of US production of 300,000 shells. Since then, we have doubled this capacity," he said.
According to the commissioner, the European Defense Fund plays a key role in increasing production, and Europe should continue to strengthen its defense capacity in accordance with increasing threats by Russia.
"On January 24 this year, our production capacity was one million shells a year. By the end of 2024, we plan to increase this capacity to 1.7 million, and by 2025 - up to 2.5 million shells a year. These figures allow us to compete with Russian figures," Breton explained.
We will remind that since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine has introduced more than one hundred new models of ammunition into the army, about half of which have been tested since the beginning of 2024.
