Donald Trump's lawyers began to actively prepare for the termination of criminal proceedings against his client in connection with his victory in the election of the US President. They argue that the future presidential status of Trump will create legal obstacles to further consideration of cases, and claim that these cases should be closed “immediately”.
There are four cases against Trump: two federal and two at the state level. In particular, in New York he was accused of violating the rules of financing the election campaign for paying a porn star, and in Georgia-in the creation of a "organized criminal group" to interfere with election results. Cases at the federal level include accusations of improper storage of secret documents and a probable attempt to interfere with the process of approving the election results in 2020.
Some cases are currently suspended because of legal confrontation and petitions. In particular, the US Supreme Court has recently expanded the sphere of presidential immunity, which gives Trump's protection as a former president, weakening the grounds for further prosecution.
Trump's lawyers also discuss the possibility of a presidential amnesty that allows the newly elected President to pardon himself. This decision can be made regardless of the stage of the trial, the sources of CNN indicate. Trump may also instruct the new Prosecutor General to stop all criminal cases against him and his associates.
