The launch of the world's largest thermonuclear reactor has been delayed for several years

Representatives of the international experimental thermonuclear reactor (Iter) announced the delay in launching the project for several years due to global pandemic and a significant increase in cost. The reactor plans have been revised due to these factors, and now new timing of the reactor has been commissioned for 2036 for full magnetic energy and 2039 for deuterium and trial operations.

The chairman of the project, Pietro Barabashi, emphasized the need to re-project the program to reduce operational risks and prepare the reactor for the main stages using deuterium-trium. It is also noted that tungsten will be used instead of previously provided beryllium for materials in contact with the plasma.

The Iter project, supported by numerous countries, including Kazakhstan, China, India, the EU and the US, plays an important role in the study of commercial use of thermonuclear energy, although construction is at a slow pace. It is expected that in the future this program will open new prospects in the field of energy generation.
