The tragic rocket shelling of the city of Sumy on Palm Sunday, April 13, became another cruel reminder of the price of Russian aggression. During the attack, one of the missiles, filled with shrapnel elements, exploded in the air. This led to significant destruction and a large number of victims among civilians. According to preliminary data, at least 35 people, including women, children and elderly residents, were killed.
In response to this incident, US President Donald Trump stated that Russia had made mistakes, causing a missile strike on Sumy. His words have caused considerable resonance, especially against the backdrop of discussions about the role of the United States in restraining Russia's aggression.
The reaction was made by Kai Callas, a high representative of the European Union on Foreign Affairs and Security Policy. She stated that Russia was not a missile by Sumy, but the solution of a full -scale war against Ukraine. She noted that Moscow was calculated in the ability to break the will of the Ukrainian people for resistance, as well as in the determination of Europe and partners to give Ukraine stable and comprehensive support.
Callas emphasized that in order to end the killings, Russia should be stopped, which is the source of these tragedies. She also reminded that Ukraine agreed to the 30-day ceasefire, but Russia refused to participate in this initiative and continued shelling of peaceful cities.
In her opinion, this Kremlin behavior indicates his unwillingness to complete the war. Civil infrastructure shelling and large -scale victims among civilians indicate that Moscow is not interested in negotiations or peaceful agreements. On the contrary, it demonstrates the desire to continue the fighting.
Callas emphasized that the only way to cease fire and to the beginning of serious negotiations is to increase pressure on Russia. It is about strengthening economic sanctions and continuing the supply of defense assistance to Ukraine. According to her, only a decisive and coordinated answer can force the Kremlin to change its position.
Kai Callas statement became an important political signal. She not only reacted to the words of Trump, but also outlined a clear position of the European Union: a real mistake was not a separate attack, but all the logic of war conducted by Russia. It is this war that is the source of all subsequent crimes and tragedies.
The shelling of Sumy on Palm Sunday again confirms that peaceful initiatives from Ukraine do not find any response in Moscow. Despite the calls of the international community, Russia continues rocket attacks on civilian infrastructure, ignoring any diplomatic effort.
