Algeria calls early presidential elections for September

The state media reported that Algeria plans to hold early presidential elections on September 7 this year, according to the decision of the current President Abdelmadmagida Tebbun.

The statement published after the Tebbun meeting with the lawmakers and the commander -in -chief of the army states: "It was decided to hold early presidential elections on September 7, 2024."

Tebbun, who is 79 in November, was elected in December 2019 after promocratic protests that arose in Algeria in February of that year, forced the long -standing President Abdelaziz Buteflik to resign.

The Tebbun did not declare his future intentions to participate in the elections for the second term, and did not explain the reason for the appointment of early presidential elections.

In 2019, a valid president whose powers had to end in December received 58% of the vote.
