Austrian OMV stopped cooperation with Gazprom

The Austrian oil and gas company OMV has officially terminated a long -term contract with the Russian company Gazprom Export on gas supply, which was to operate until 2040. The decision to terminate was made due to numerous violations of contractual obligations by Gazprom export.

The contract, concluded in 2006, provided for the supply of large volumes of gas. However, on November 16, 2024, Gazprom export completely stopped supply for OMV. Prior to that, the company received approximately 5 TV-hours of gas a month across the gas border between Austria and Slovakia.

OMV Alfred Stern said that the company had been forced to take this step because of significant violations by Gazprom exports, stressing that OMV is now resting on alternative energy sources.

OMV successfully diversified its gas sources. Supply is now provided at the expense of:

  • Own deposits in Norway and Austria.
  • External gas suppliers.
  • Procurement of liquefied natural gas (PPG) .

Today, the OMV gas storage facilities in Austria are filled by about 85% , which guarantees a stable supply to the company's customers.

It is important to note that OMV has also won an arbitration lawsuit against Gazprom worth 230 million euros . The court made this decision in the case of disruption of gas supply on a separate contract concluded between the companies earlier.
