Berlin techno is included in UNESCO's national list of intangible cultural heritage. The nomination was made by the German Ministry of Culture in recognition of the contribution to the cultural identity of the city. This campaign lasted over ten years and was led by Rave the Planet, a non-profit organization supporting electronic music culture. The application for the inclusion of techno in the UNESCO list was submitted in November 2022.
The representatives of the organization welcomed everyone who participated in the formation and development of Berlin's technoculture, emphasizing the importance of this event for the entire culture. The reaction of Berlin's techno club network was also very positive, describing the decision as another important milestone for all members of the techno community.
The impact of this decision on the recognition of club culture as a valuable sector that deserves protection and support is also positively noted. In addition to Berlin techno, five new items were added to the national list of intangible cultural heritage, including a singing tradition, a winter parade in Bavaria and other outstanding elements of German cultural heritage. Currently, the German UNESCO list has 150 items.
