Boris Pistorius has given up the fight for the post of Chancellor of Germany

German Minister Boris Pistorius announced that he would not nominate his candidacy for the post of Federal Chancellor in the extraordinary elections planned for February 23. He reported this in a video report, which was published on the resources of the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

"I just told the leaders of our party and parliamentary groups that I will not nominate as a candidate for the position of Federal Chancellor. This is my sovereign and quite personal decision," Pistorius said.

The Minister also expressed support for the current head of Government Olaf Scholz, calling him "a prominent federal chancellor." This decision can affect the further positions of the SPD, which is already inferior in polls to opposition conservatives and far -right.

The popularity of Pistorius, much higher than Scholz's ratings, has previously forced many party members to call him to participate in the struggle for the post of chancellor. However, the SPD seems to be preparing to officially put forward Scholz as a candidate next week.

Early elections that will take place against the background of a difficult political situation in Germany will have an impact not only on the country's domestic policy, but also on its external course, including relations with Ukraine.
