The United Kingdom has played an important role in facilitating the reach of the United States and Ukraine on a possible armistice with Russia. Jonathan Powell, the UK Prime Minister Advisor to National Security, visited Kiev, where he helped in preparation of a written proposal to end hostilities and further steps towards peace.
It is noted that European leaders, including the UK Prime Minister, Kir Starmer, were actively working to restore trust between Ukraine and the US. The older emphasized the importance of the agreements achieved, calling them a "outstanding breakthrough", which is an important step in the way to peace for Ukraine.
Powell, together with American advisor Mike Wolts and representatives of France and Germany, worked on creating a ceasefire plan and further measures for its implementation. During his visit to Kiev, he met with President Vladimir Zelensky and assisted in the preparation of a written document that provided a temporary pause in hostilities and measures to strengthen confidence, including the exchange of prisoners of war, the return of stolen Ukrainian children and the release of civilians.
The proposal, which was agreed by Kyiv and Washington, became the basis for an agreement signed in Saudi Arabia. After the negotiations in Jeddi, the Cyrus Starmer congratulated the delegations of Ukraine and the US on the agreements reached and emphasized that "we now have to double our efforts" to ensure real peace for Ukraine.
