Britain will release more than a thousand prisoners early due to prison overcrowding

The UK government has announced the decision to release more than a thousand prisoners ahead of time, which has become part of a new strategy to overcome the problem of overcrowding in prison institutions of England and Wales. This decision is caused by a critical situation in prisons where the number of prisoners is much higher than the design capacity.

About it reports BBC.

Among the about 1,100 people who will be able to release on Tuesday will not be convicted of serious crimes such as murder, sexual crimes or terrorism. Most of them were kept in open -type prisons.

The implementation of the scheme began in September, when 1700 people were released. In total, as part of this initiative, they plan to release 5,500 seats in prisons.

Prisoners who have served more than 40% of their term of time may apply for early dismissal.

The Government also considers the ability to change the model and the wider use of house arrest with supervision measures that have become accessible through modern technologies.

As of September, there were nearly 87.5 thousand prisoners in British prisons and fewer than 1,700 vacancies remained.

The influx of people to prison has increased sharply after anti -immigrant riots in the summer of 2024.
