Why Poland did not hand over the MiG-29 to Ukraine: Sikorsky's comment

The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Poland, Radoslaw Sikorsky, commented on the accusations of the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyi, regarding Warsaw's failure to provide old MiG-29 fighter jets, despite previous agreements. According to polsatnews.pl, Sikorsky emphasized that Poland made a lot of efforts to support Ukraine at the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Russia.

According to him, the West has sent Ukraine aid in the amount of 200 billion euros, and Poland, taking into account the percentage of GDP, has done more for Ukraine than any other country. "We are trying to help, but we are also a frontline country. Russia also threatens us, and not everything is possible," he said.

This statement was a response to criticism of Zelenskyi, who called on Poland to protect the strategically important city of Stryi in the Lviv region, as well as to hand over MiG-29 aircraft to Ukraine. Zelensky emphasized that Ukraine does not have enough systems to protect gas storage facilities, and emphasized the importance of cooperation with Poland in this context.

The President of Ukraine also explained that after negotiations with former NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, an agreement was reached on a police mission for Poland. "We really wanted to get MiGs from Poland, but they couldn't hand them over to us because they didn't have enough of their own," Zelensky noted.

However, in his opinion, Poland did not fulfill the agreement on the provision of aircraft, and again declared the lack of resources for this. Zelensky pointed out that when the issue became urgent and no support was received from other neighboring countries, the option of transferring MiGs remained unfulfilled.
