The Chernobyl zone is planned to be turned into a modern innovation center and scientific hub

In the territory of Kyiv region, where the Chernobyl exclusion zone is located, they plan to create an innovation center and a scientific hub aimed at safe revival. The Minister of Environmental Protection Ruslan Streach reported this during a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on Environmental Policy and Environmental Management.

The main provisions of the Exclusion Zone Development Strategy for 2032, which was approved by the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine, are presented in the Verkhovna Rada, provides for the creation of a new perspective for the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. "This strategic document is a priority for taking effective measures and updating legislation. We have the opportunity to rewrite the history of this territory and make it a center of innovation and environmental leadership," Ruslan Strelets emphasized.

According to the concept, Chernobyl can become a modern center of research of a peaceful atom, the development of scientific and research infrastructure. The ministry considers the possibility of cooperation with foreign partners to accommodate new equipment at enterprises in the Chernobyl zone.

In addition, the development of the Biosphere Reserve of the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is planned in order to preserve natural complexes and variety of flora and fauna, as well as the development of tourist infrastructure. "Despite its closed status, the Chernobyl exclusion zone is of considerable interest among Ukrainians and foreign visitors," the ministry added.

However, the greatest challenge in the future is the demining of the territory, as some areas of the area can still be infected with mines.
