Will the Jeep use the Cerokee name?

The Stellantis Auto Producer, which has a Jeep brand, can refuse to use the cult name "Cherokee" in its new models. Although Jeep Cherokee was one of the most recognizable SUVs in the market, its further fate is in question. This issue has become especially relevant after the Cheroki people have repeatedly appealed to the company to stop using their name.

The Cherokee model helped promote SUVs and has gained serious popularity among motorists. However, due to the rise in prices by the Stellantis Automobile Group and Demand Decreased, the sales of the model fell sharply, which led to its removal from production in 2023 without direct replacement. Despite this, the company has repeatedly declared a possible return of the model. Stelantis has already announced plans to release three brand new Jeep models, including a new medium -sized SUV, which is likely not to be called Cherokee. There are no official statements yet, but changes in brand names are not news for Jeep. So, when the SUV Cherokee XJ was removed from production, it was replaced with the Liberty model, which existed two generations before Cherokee's return in 2014 was announced. It is worth noting that the brand has repeatedly evaded the use of Cherokee. When a new model appeared, it was even called "the new mass UV" (Utility VEHICLE). This step can be interpreted as an attempt by the company to avoid misunderstandings with indigenous peoples who have repeatedly asked to abandon this name. Although Jeep published a statement in 2021 stating that their car names were elected respect for indigenous Americans and should honor their traditions, such appeals from the Cheroki community remain relevant.

With regard to the car itself, the new generation that will appear later this year will be built on the Stla Large platform, which is also used for Recon and Wagoneer S. The model will receive variants with gasoline and hybrid power units, which indicates a trend for electrification and modernization of the line. In addition, Stellantis announced the release of new Jeep Recon, updated compass and renegade models, and Gladiator 4xe. Such changes hope that the brand will continue to adapt to modern market requirements, combining environmental technologies with powerful out -road capabilities. Changes in the names of automotive models are not uncommon. Many schools and sports teams have already abandoned the use of names that reflect indigenous peoples and switched to other options. It is part of a global tendency to a more sensitive attitude to cultural and historical aspects.

If Jeep gives up the name Cherokee, it will be another step in the direction of change and adaptation to the modern requirements of society and the market.
