The WBC World Heavyweight Champion David Benavides (30-0, 24 KOs) abandoned a possible battle with Ukrainian boxer Alexander Usik (23-0, 14 KO), recognizing its unpreparedness for this match.
According to Fight Hub TV, the father of American boxer Jose Benavides told about the rejection of battle. According to him, at first it was planned that Benavides would rise in a survival weight to meet with the Usik, but after careful reflection, the boxer team came to the conclusion that their ward is not ready for such a duel.
"We planned to fight with Alexander Usik in the high weight. David wanted to rise to the Division of the Ukrainian. But after the discussion, we realized that we were not ready for this fight, and decided to give up the idea," Jose Benavides explained. He also noted that although fans and organizations can allow such duels, Benavides team does not consider itself ready for such a difficult meeting.
The stated readiness of the boxer can be due to many factors: from physical preparation to psychological readiness to such a serious challenge as a battle with a Usik, which has considerable experience and powerful technique. Usik, in turn, is one of the most dominant boxers in the overhead division, and his experience on the world stage is a significant asset.
Although the battle with Usik will not happen, Benavides still remains one of the most promising boxers of its weight category. Throughout his career, he demonstrated great fighting qualities, and probably in the future he is waiting for other great matches.
