The summer season is a time of fruit and berries, and one of the most beloved treats of Ukrainians is cherry. But despite its juicy look, not every berry is safe for health. Many sellers, especially in the markets, may not even know that the goods they sell have been chemical processing during transportation. But there is an easy way to determine before buying whether the berry was treated with toxic chemicals.
Berries are treated with chemicals from other regions or countries. This is done to protect the crop from spoilage, pests and diseases, as well as to improve the appearance - to make the fruit brighter, shiny and attractive to the buyer.
Although such a cherry may look perfect, its taste is often lost. At best - the berry will be fresh or watery, and at worst - can cause allergic reactions or even food poisoning.
Experts advise to pay attention to one specific detail - a recess near the stem. It is a place where the cherry is attached to the branch. If the berry has been treated with chemicals, a barely noticeable whitish plaque often appears in this recess.
This plaque appears due to the settlement of chemicals that are not erased during transportation. In other places, the berries rub against each other, and therefore the plaque disappears, but in the recess near the ponytail - remains.
Before buying a cherry:
-
Carefully inspect the place near the stem of each berry;
-
Avoid buying cherries with a white coating in the recess;
-
Feel free to ask the seller to show a few berries closer;
-
Choose the products of local farmers with a collection season rather than large transportation.
