The national nuclear energy generating company "Energoatom" and the American company Westinghouse started a joint project to build the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant 5 and 6 using AR1000 technology.
The project launch ceremony took place at the site of the Khmelnytskyi nuclear plant with the participation of the US Ambassador to Ukraine Bridget Brink and the Minister of Energy of Ukraine Herman Galushchenko. Acting Petro Kotin, chairman of the board of Energoatom, noted that AR1000 is a proven technology with unique safety systems provided by a modular design and the ability to maneuver.
Patrick Fragman, president and executive director of Westinghouse Electric Company, also expressed gratitude for participating in the project, emphasizing the importance of cooperation with Ukraine in the development of the energy sector. According to him, AR1000 is an improved technology with increased efficiency, and the power units are compact and cost-effective.
Galushchenko also noted the importance of new blocks for the energy system of Ukraine, especially in the conditions of aggression from Russia. He emphasized the possibility of balancing the work of new power units, which will be an important factor in the conditions of modern challenges for the country.
Regarding project financing, Kotin indicated that part of the funds can be provided by the Energoatom company alone, but the main financing goes to cover the electricity tariff for the population.
This project will be an important stage in the development of the energy industry of Ukraine and will establish partnership relations with American companies in the field of nuclear energy.
