G7 may refuse to strengthen oil sanctions against Russia

The countries of the Great Seven (G7) consider the possibility of refusing to strengthen oil sanctions against Russia, which should first force Moscow to sit at the negotiation table for Ukraine. It is reported by Bloomberg, referring to the project, which is discussed among G7 members.

Sources familiar with the course of negotiations note that the G7 States have not yet been able to reconcile the final version of the joint communique, which is planned to be published on the anniversary of the full -scale invasion of Russia into Ukraine.

According to the last project of February 19, the Allies abandoned a point that provided for the instructions of finance ministers to revise or adapt price restrictions on Russian oil to increase pressure on the Kremlin. Instead, the new version emphasizes that "strong security guarantees and integration of Ukraine in the EU are critical for providing long -term peace."

The Western media noted that this position is significantly mitigated compared to the initial version of the document, which called for peace, "which does not reward aggression" and envisaged the presence of troops and resources in Ukraine under international supervision.

Also, a reference to the Euro -Atlantic integration of Ukraine was removed from the decision, and the wording of Russian aggression changed: if the war was called "illegal", then the last version refers to the "destructive war that began with the invasion of Russia into Ukraine."

The diplomats that participated in the discussions noted Bloomberg on the conditions of anonymity that negotiations on the final text are ongoing and further changes are possible.
