NATO Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, justified the statements of Donald Trump's administration on Ukraine's accession to NATO. In an interview for NV, he explained that, despite the clear wording of Ukraine's irreversible path to NATO, Trump's statement that Ukraine will never become a member of the Alliance do not contradict the decision made at the Washington Summit.
Stoltenberg noted that the summit was confirmed that the path of Ukraine to NATO was irreversible, but stressed that "it was never promised that NATO membership would be part of a peace agreement or ceasefire." According to him, the United States sometimes expresses that Ukraine's accession to NATO is not part of peaceful agreements, and this "does not contradict the formulation of the Washington Summit." Rutte added that the peace agreement and the long -term NATO membership perspective are two separate issues. Speaking of the possibility of Ukraine joining the Alliance during the Trump Presidency, NATO Secretary General said, "Do not interpret what he said." He stressed that NATO has a clear wording on Ukraine's irreversible path to the Alliance, but when it happens - it is unknown.
Thus, Stoltenberg recalled that the NATO ways for Ukraine are open, but the entry process takes time and depends on various factors.
