Georgia passed laws banning LGBT propaganda

The Speaker of the Georgia Parliament has signed controversial laws prohibiting LGBT propaganda, despite the fact that the president of the country, Salome Zurabishvili, refused to sign them within the prescribed period. These legislative initiatives have caused wide discussions and protest actions in Georgia and abroad.

For this, the ruling "Georgian Dream" accused Salome Zurabishvili of unwillingness to defend "family values".

“From this refusal it becomes clear where Salome Zurabishvili stands and where oppositionists without the Motherland, who have not had the courage to openly express their opinion on this law and who fled shamefully from the hall during the vote. The law that I sign does not reflect current, temporary, changing ideas and ideologies, but is based on common sense, historical experience and centuries -old Christian, Georgian and European values, ”said Speaker Shalva Papuasvili.

The West states that these laws restrict LGBT rights. Because of it, as well as the EU Inaging Law, it threatened to deprive the Georgia of the visa -free regime.

Zurabishvili could be vetoed, but the Georgian Dream could overcome it. And so, according to the Constitution, the right to sign them passed the speaker of the parliament.
