Global innovation index: Ukraine continues to rise on the world stage

The specialized agency of the UN - the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) - announced the release of the 16th edition of the Global Innovation Index. This index determines the rating of 132 world economies and provides information on the 100 best scientific and technological innovation clusters.

Despite the challenges of war, Ukraine has shown impressive growth this year, rising from 57th to 55th place in the Global Innovation Index. The country is ahead of North Macedonia, Serbia and Chile, and has entered the TOP-3 most innovative economies among countries with lower average incomes, along with India and Vietnam.

Ukraine received high marks in the categories of knowledge and technology, business development and creative achievements, but is marked by challenges in the state of the institutional field, infrastructure and market development due to conditions of full-scale war.

For 13 years in a row, Switzerland leads the ranking, it is recognized as the most innovative country in 2023. Sweden, USA, Great Britain and Singapore also made the top five.

In the section of innovation clusters, Tokyo-Yokohama leads, followed by Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou, Seoul, Beijing and Shanghai-Suzhou. This year, China overtook the US in the number of innovation clusters.

The Global Innovation Index is an important tool for measuring the innovation performance of countries and is used by policymakers, business leaders and economists to benchmark and assess temporal innovation progress. Ukraine has been actively participating in this index since 2012, which indicates its constant innovative development.
