In 2015, a group of deaver enthusiasts made a sensational discovery near the Mayai coast: they found treasures with incredible history on the site of the Spanish galleons of the 18th century. However, the joy of the discovery overshadowed the theft of some of the found artifacts, which caused a large -scale police investigation.
The Spanish galleons, which sank in 1715, carried a huge load of gold and silver from the New World to Europe. The fleet of 12 ships left the Cuban harbor in June of that year, but near the modern coast, Miami got into a cruel storm. As a result, 11 ships went to the bottom with hundreds of sailors and holds filled with jewelry. The total cost of losses, according to historians, can reach $ 400 million.
The divers, which in 2015 accidentally came across these historical remains, found gold coins whose value exceeded $ 1 million. The find quickly attracted attention, but soon some of the coins disappeared. The Mayai police started investigating, suspecting the search team members of theft. After careful work, law enforcement officers found that criminals had stolen more than 50 coins. Thanks to the special operation, some treasures were stored in private collections or even thrown into the sea to avoid exposure.
The found artifacts confirm that these are the jewels that were transported in 1715. These treasures are not only a financial but also a cultural heritage because they open new pages of the history of maritime trips and tragedies of the Spanish Navy.
