General Director of the World Health Organization (WHO) Tedros Adan Hebreessus and his colleagues were under the air strike at the Airport of Sanaa, the capital of Yemen. The incident occurred while waiting for a flight within the WHO humanitarian mission.
According to the Hebreesus, the attack occurred at the moment when he and his team were waiting for a plane. The bombing damaged the runway, flight control tower and departure area. The WHO leader himself noted that the shock wave struck the territory "a few meters" from the location of the delegation.
Unfortunately, two people in the airport building were killed, and one of the crew members of the aircraft, which was used to take advantage of the WHO CEO, was injured.
The visit of the Hebreess to Yemen was related to the assessment of the humanitarian situation in the region, as well as negotiations on the dismissal of UN staff held by Hussites. This incident once again emphasizes the severity of a security situation in a country where many years of armed conflict continues.
