India has fined WhatsApp more than $25 million for violating its privacy policy

The CCI Competition Commission (CCI) imposed a fine on WhatsApp for the amount of $ 25.4 million for violation of antitrust laws related to the messenger privacy policy. In addition, the technological giant is ordered to refrain from exchanging users with other META applications for advertising purposes for five years.

This decision was the result of an investigation, which was started in March 2021. The reason was the Updating WhatsApp Privacy Policy, which allowed data exchanging with Facebook and its subsidiaries. Such changes have caused widespread outrage among users and concerns about the safety of personal data.

The India Government is currently studying the February Report prepared by a commission that proposes a new digital competition. This document aims to supplement the existing antitrust legislation, in particular in the context of regulating the activities of large technological companies such as META.
