Iran filed a lawsuit against four countries to the UN court

Iran filed a lawsuit with the UN International Court of Justice, challenging the decision of the Council of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) regarding the plane of the Ukrainian passenger aircraft PS752, which was shot near Tehran on January 8, 2020.

The claim was filed against four countries - Canada, Sweden, Ukraine and the United Kingdom, which initiated the consideration of Iran's responsibility for the tragedy. In his address, Iran insists that ICAO has exceeded its powers and violated the voting procedure when deciding on the case.

Tehran asks the court:

  • to recognize the lack of jurisdiction of ICAO in this case;

  • exclude the UK from the process;

  • To cancel the ICAO Council's decision as legally invalid.

Iran continues to insist that the plane's knocking was "inadvertently" due to the "human mistake" by the military.

Recall that the Boeing 737-800 NG Airlines "International Airlines of Ukraine" operated the PS752 flight on the Tehran-Kiev route and was shot down by the Iranian air defense system shortly after the rise. All 176 people were on board.

In 2024, four countries - Ukraine, Canada, Sweden and the United Kingdom - appealed to the ICAO Council to consider Iran's responsibility for the killing of a civilian liner. Iran tried to challenge the jurisdiction of the organization, but the ICAO Council stood on the plaintiffs and decided to transfer the case to the merits.
