Iranian activist Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize

Challenging archaic laws and defending women's rights, Narges Mohammadi won the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize. However, while in prison in Tehran, the award was passed on to her children.

Iranian human rights defender and activist Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize for her determined fight against the oppression of women in Iran and tireless promotion of human rights and freedom for all. This news was announced by the Norwegian Nobel Committee, which also reported that due to the activist's imprisonment, the award itself was transferred to her children.

Mohammadi, who was sentenced to a long prison term and more than 150 lashes, became a recognized figure in the struggle for women's rights and general freedom in Iran. She was arrested because of her active participation in protests against the mandatory wearing of the hijab and other restrictions imposed by the Iranian government.

The Nobel Committee recognized her indomitability and identified her for her merits in the fight for human and women's rights. It is about recognizing the fate and courage of a woman who, despite systemic pressure and repression, continues to speak out against injustice.

It should also be noted that Narges Mohammadi's husband, Taghi Rahmani, was also sentenced to prison in Iran for his activities against the death penalty and other human rights violations. After 14 years in prison, he left for France, but his wife remained in Iran, continuing her struggle.

With Mohammadi incarcerated, the Nobel Peace Prize itself was given to her children as a symbol of recognition of their mother's struggle and a reminder of the importance of continuing to fight for human rights and freedom. The award gives a voice to those who feel oppressed by authoritarian regimes and fight for justice and equality.
