An Irish general has been elected to the position of chairman of the EU Military Committee

Despite its status of the political bloc, the European Union has its highest military structure - a committee whose head is elected annually. On Thursday, Irish Lieutenant General Sean Clancy, who is the chairman of the General Staff of the Republic of Armed Forces, was appointed to this position.

The announcement of the appointment of a new EU Committee Chairman for military issues has appeared on the "X" network from the current chairman of Robert Briger, a former commander of the Austrian Armed Forces Staff.

It is interesting that instead of a representative of a neutral country, the head of the committee becomes a general from another neutral state. Neither Austria nor the Republic of Ireland is part of military alliances.

Formally, General Clancy's candidacy must yet be approved by the EU Council. His cadence will begin in May 2025 and last three years.

Earlier it was announced that the European Union agreed with Ukraine security guarantees, which could be signed by early July.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that security guarantees concluded with partner countries are significantly helping Ukraine, especially when waiting for additional assistance from the US Congress.

It should also be mentioned that the security agreement between Ukraine and Germany has become the most powerful document.
