Italy is preparing to build the longest suspension bridge in the world

The Italian authorities have decided to bring to life the long -awaited "millennial plan" on the construction of the longest suspension bridge in the world through the Messina Strait. This bridge will connect the mainland of Italy with the island of Sicily, forming a striking structure about 3300 meters long.

The plan envisages the construction of the bridge over the thin strip of the sea between the "toe" of the Italian "boots" in Calabria and the Sicilian metropolis of Messin. If this project becomes a reality, its span will be 60% longer than the current record holder - Bridge Charcoal in Turkey, whose length is 2023 meters.

The idea of connecting the mainland of Italy and Sicily has been discussed for decades. The first time the construction of the suspension bridge was proposed in the 1860s, and since then Italian politicians have returned to this idea again and again. Even Prime Minister Silvio Berlusoni made this initiative in 2002, but previous attempts were not successful.

Despite the doubts and risks related to environmental and seismic aspects, Italy has decided to continue the project with this. Infrastructure Minister Matteo Salvini confirmed that the construction of the longest suspension bridge in the world will still begin, despite all the challenges.
