The Italian police conducted a large -scale operation against the mafia clans of Sicily, arresting more than 180 people. The main purpose of the raids was to prevent the restoration of the goat's governing structure known as the Dome.
The operation, which began at dawn, has become one of the largest in recent years. It was involved in 1,200 carbines, staff of the Department of Crime Crime, doglogists, helicopter squadrons and other special units.
Among the arrested are a few famous mafia bosses who recently released after the appeals won. One of them is Tommaso Like, who spent 12 years in prison. In 2023, he found himself in the center of the scandal when he celebrated his silver wedding in the Church of Palermo, where Judge Giovanni Falcone, a famous mafia fighter, was buried in 1992.
The investigation showed that even being behind bars, mafia effectively managed their clans through encrypted messages. Police have installed special programs for tracking the devices of criminals and found that they regularly contact with their accomplices.
So far, only the aliases of two key figures that have been adopted by mafia in prison have been able to decipher. In the chats, they appeared as "Robert de Niro" and "Spiderman" . Investigators are currently trying to install their real persons.
According to law enforcement officers, with the development of technologies, the mafia changed its methods. Now its members are less likely to hold personal meetings using digital communication instead.
In addition, the fight against the goat of the Nosta is complicated through informants within law enforcement agencies that prevent mafia about future raids.
Italy's Defense Minister Guido Krozetto called the operation successful and thanked the law enforcement officers for their work.
The detainees are suspected of a number of serious crimes, including:
- participation in the mafia organization;
- attempts on murder;
- extortion;
- illegal drug trafficking;
- incitement of crimes with the use of weapons;
- Promoting illegal gambling.
