Climatic changes open to Ukraine new agrarian opportunities

Despite the global risks caused by climate change, these processes can not only be a challenge but also a impetus for agrarian breakthrough. This was stated by the candidate of geographical sciences Vera Balabukh in an interview with RBC-Ukraine, emphasizing that thanks to innovation in irrigation, the country is able to turn into one of the leading breadbasks of the world.

One of the main positive effects is the elongated growing season. With the increase in the average annual temperature in Ukraine, it is possible to grow a second and even third yield per year. For example, after harvesting winter in June, it is still time to sow legumes or legumes before the cold.

There are also favorable conditions for the cultivation of thermophilic crops, which could previously be found only in the southern latitudes. However, this requires the modernization of irrigation: rainfall and dry periods forces agrarians to switch to drip and underground irrigation systems.

Another promising direction is the expansion of the agricultural zone north. For example, growing sunflower and corn is already extended to Polesie, which has previously been of little suitable for such crops. This testifies to Ukraine's potential in strengthening positions in the global grain and oil market.

The uneven climate change in the regions also plays a role. The average annual temperature increased in the northeast of the country, in particular in Chernihiv and Sumy regions - by more than 1.5 ° C. This opens new horizons for local agriculture.

Although climate change has many challenges, Ukraine has a chance to use the situation in its favor. By investing in modern agro -technology and adaptation to new conditions, the country can significantly increase its food and economic capacity.
