National Security Advisor Mike Volza is actively using Signal to discuss key security issues in the world. According to Politico, the Volza team regularly creates group chats in Signal, in particular to discuss situations in Ukraine, China, the Gaza Sector, the Middle East, Africa and Europe.
This extended use of Signal differs from previously reported information and gives a new look at how often national security officials of the Trump administration rely on this publicly available application to exchange messages to perform their work. According to four persons who were personally added to the chat, at least 20 such groups were created, and these chats were used to discuss various aspects of national security, including confidential information.
"It was a common phenomenon to chat on any national security topic," said one of the participants of the chat, noting that these groups were often attended by members of the Cabinet of Ministers and high-ranking officials. Chat often became a platform to discuss sensitive issues concerning global political and security situations.
However, this practice has caused concern among some national security veterans, which have warned that the use of Signal may violate federal laws to protect confidential information. In particular, if chats are automatically removed, it may violate the rules for storing documents and ensuring national security from foreign threats.
The US National Security Council (NSC) Brian Gusi explained that Signal is allowed on government devices and some agencies automatically install this application on their employees. He also stressed that the application was used not only in the Trump administration but also in the administration of Joe Biden, which testifies to his popularity among officials of both governments.
