The contract for gas transit through Ukraine will not be extended, but Slovakia can lease the GTS

At the moment, the issue of extending the contract for the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after 2024 is not considered. However, Ukraine intends to become part of the European gas network, which gives companies from EU the opportunity to independently order the transit capacity of the Ukrainian gas transportation system (GTS).

According to information received from a government source, the issue of gas transit in 2025 was not discussed during the meeting between Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico. In response to Fico's question about the extension of the contract, Shmygal said that the current transit contract with Gazprom, which ends this year, will not be extended.

The press service of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine confirmed that Ukraine does not intend to extend the gas transportation contract with Gazprom. However, there is a possibility that the Slovak company can independently lease the capacities of the Ukrainian HTS, which will make it possible to continue gas transit after 2024.

So far, no official requests regarding gas transportation in 2025 have been received from the Slovakian side to the GTS Operator of Ukraine.

We would like to remind you that the current gas transit contract between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom was concluded at the end of 2019 for five years. Ukraine, despite the difficult situation, allows Russian gas to pass through its territory to European countries. The volume of transit is currently 42 million cubic meters per day.
