The USSR Space Apparatus fell into the Indian Ocean after 53 years in orbit

The old Soviet spacecraft "Space-482", launched in 1972, came down from the orbit and fell into the Indian Ocean near the coast of Indonesia. About it reports The Guardian with reference to the American Space Command.

The apparatus was launched by the Soviet Union on March 31, 1972 for the purpose of Venus research. However, due to the accident during the removal to the interplanetary trajectory, it did not reach the target and remained in the Earth's orbit. For over half a century, space-482 revolved around the Earth as space debris.

The components of the device again entered the dense layers of the atmosphere on May 10, 2025 and burned before the debris fell into the ocean. It is reported that the event happened near the capital of Indonesia Jakarta, but no threat to the population or infrastructure was recorded.

Space-482 has long been considered potentially dangerous due to a strong structure, which included a heat-protective casing designed to enter the atmosphere of Venus. Because of this, some fragments could survive the re -entrance to the Earth's atmosphere.

This case has become one of the longest examples of the artificial object in orbit after a failed space mission. Since the early 2000s, NASA and international space agencies have been watching the facility flight trajectory since the early 2000s.
