Lithuania is preparing for an important reform of military service

The Seimas of Lithuania has taken the first step towards an important reform of military service in the country. Parliamentarians supported the draft law, which provides for the conscription of young men immediately after finishing school.

According to the information of the Lithuanian publication Delfi, after receiving the summons, Lithuanians will not have the opportunity to enter a higher educational institution until they complete their military service. The duration of service in the army will be 9 months, but under certain conditions this term can be shortened to six months.

Those who have successfully graduated from a higher educational institution and received specialties that are in short supply for the army will undergo basic military training for only 3 months.

Amendments to the law on compulsory service, if finally approved, will enter into force in 2026. This initiative is aimed at attracting more specialists to the army, who will become a reserve for the effective performance of tasks in the event of crisis situations.
