Lithuania has announced exit from the International Convention

On March 6, 2025, Lithuania officially released from the International Convention on Caseta Ammunition, which prohibits the purchase, use and production of such ammunition. This decision came into force after a six -month term, which Lithuania initiated in the fall of 2024, submitting the relevant documents to the UN.

Lithuania justified its decision by the fact that Russia is actively using cassette ammunition in the war in Ukraine. The country's authorities have stated that all available means, including cassette ammunition, which is an effective way of enhancing defense capability to restrain the potential aggressor.

Caseta ammunition is a container containing several dozen or hundreds of sub -core, which after the explosion is scattered over a large area, which can cover the area to the football field. Opponents of the use of cassette ammunition note that they are difficult to control, which increases the danger to the civilians, as many such ammunition do not explode immediately and can threaten civilians for a long time.

Nevertheless, the Lithuanian authorities have promised to minimize the negative effects of the use of cassette ammunition, planning the introduction of special algorithms for the rapid detection and disposal of non -ranging ammunition after hostilities were completed.

Lithuania also considers the possibility of leaving the Ottawa Convention, which prohibits anti -personnel mines, and plans to make a final decision on this issue in the coming months.
