The European Union will approve the 18th package of sanctions against Russia in the coming days, which according to French President Emmanuel Macron, will become the most ambitious and powerful since the beginning of a full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into Ukraine. He stated this on June 27 in an interview, Ukrinform reports.
The new sanctions package will have an unprecedented scale and will include harsh measures in the financial and energy sectors. In particular, the sanction will include embargo on the import of Russian oil, even if it was processed in third countries. According to Macron, it will give a powerful signal to the Kremlin about the determination of the European Union in increasing pressure.
French President also stressed that the package has been agreed with partners from the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Japan, and is also consistent with the initiatives that are currently being considered at the US Senate. A common goal is to strike such a strong blow to Russia's economy to force the Kremlin to return to the negotiation process.
"It is important to approve, as it will be a powerful restraint on the Russian economy, capable of forcing Russia to return to the negotiation table," Macron stressed.
The new sanctions package should be a key step in Ukraine's international support and increased pressure on Russia in response to aggression. At the same time, sanctions are aimed at reducing the Kremlin's income from energy exports and reducing the possibility of funding for hostilities.
