Mark Rutte became the new head of NATO

On Tuesday, October 1, the former Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, officially assumed the post of Secretary General of NATO. He is tasked with leading the military alliance at a critical moment when the war in Ukraine continues, as well as on the eve of important presidential elections in the United States, Reuters reports.

Change of leadership in NATO

At a ceremony held at NATO headquarters in Brussels, Rutte succeeded Jens Stoltenberg, who had led the organization for ten years. Rutte is expected to continue his predecessor's priorities, including focusing on supporting Ukraine, urging NATO countries to increase defense spending and involving the US in European security.

Currently, uncertainty hangs over the conflict in Ukraine, as the war has turned into a protracted conflict. The issue of US support for NATO and Ukraine also remains open, especially in light of the US election, where Donald Trump, a NATO skeptic, is running for re-election against Vice President Kamala Harris.

Rutte, who resigned as prime minister of the Netherlands this year after a record 14 years in office, is known for his staunch support for Ukraine. He urged Europeans to "stop whining" about Trump's possible return and focus on strengthening the continent's defenses.

New challenges for NATO

The war in Ukraine led to significant changes in NATO's approach to security. The alliance sent thousands of additional troops to its eastern flank and revised its defense plans, seriously assessing the possibility of an attack from Moscow.

Although Western leaders emphasize that NATO is a defensive alliance, Moscow continues to perceive it as a threat to its security. Diplomats and analysts believe that one of Rutte's key tasks will be to convince NATO members to allocate additional troops, weapons and financial resources to implement new defense strategies.

The important role of the USA in NATO

The United States remains the dominant force in NATO, but decision-making is by consensus, requiring the Secretary General to be adept at brokering compromises between allies. Rutte's experience in running coalition governments makes him potentially successful in this new role.

A look into the future

Rutte has many challenges ahead, including the likely return of Trump to the presidency, calls from Eastern European countries to strengthen defense and Ukraine's requests for increased military aid. The success of his leadership in NATO will depend on his ability to unite allies and ensure sustained support for Ukraine in the face of the ongoing conflict.
