The ISS calls for Hungary to stay in the Roman Statute

The International Criminal Court (ISS) expressed concern for the decision of the Hungarian government to withdraw from the Roman Statute, urging the country to preserve its participation in the international justice system. This is stated in the presents, published on the ISS official website on April 3.

The Presidency of the Assembly of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Ministry of Internal Affairs has stated that it is disappointed with such a step of Hungarian power, as the country's exit can weaken international efforts to combat impunity.

"The presidency is sorry about such a turn of events. When the State Party comes out of the Roman Statute, it overshadows our common desire for justice and weakens our determination to fight impunity ," the statement reads.

The appeal emphasizes that Hungary, as one of the countries that previously supported the ISS, has the right to express its concern through the Assembly of States Parties.

"The presidency urges Hungary to a meaningful discussion on this issue ," the organization said.

The Roman Statute is a fundamental document that regulates the activities of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and defines its jurisdiction in military crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide. Hungary can influence the effectiveness of international justice, especially in the context of investigations of probable military crimes.

Hungary became the first EU country to declare its intention to get out of the Jurisdiction of the ISS. This decision can have consequences for cooperation with other European countries and international institutions.

If Hungary has completed its way out, it can create a precedent for other countries that criticize the activities of the ISS. At the same time, such a step can weaken the positions of Hungary itself in international organizations and cause concern among the EU and NATO allies.

The ISS urges Budapest not to make a final decision without preliminary discussions with other participating countries, as well as to participate in the discussion on possible ways of solving the concern that caused this decision.
