Moldova introduces a state of emergency due to the threat of an energy crisis

Moldova Parliament has approved a decision to introduce a state of emergency for 60 days, starting on December 16. This was the answer to the threat of stopping Russian gas from January 1, which could cause a large -scale energy crisis in the country.

The decision was supported by 56 deputies out of 101 on the submission of Prime Minister Dorin. According to the Head of Government, this step will allow you to respond promptly to the challenges caused by "gas blackmail" by Moscow.

"The purpose of a state of emergency is to ensure energy security, protect citizens and avoid a humanitarian crisis that may occur when gas supply stops," the Prime Minister said.

Moldova receives Russian gas through a transit agreement with Ukraine, which expires on December 31. Ukraine has announced that it would not continue the contract with Gazprom. This creates the risk of complete storage of gas, which can particularly adversely affect Transnistria and destabilize the energy system of the whole country.

An alternative gas supply route is considered a pipeline through Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. However, Gazprom requires Moldova to pay a debt of $ 709 million, which creates additional obstacles.

In a state of emergency, the government will receive authority to make quick decisions, in particular:

  • restriction of energy exports;
  • ensuring priority supply of energy resources to the population;
  • implementation of measures to optimize gas and electricity consumption.

The government will also be able to promptly look for alternative sources of gas supply and enter into appropriate agreements.

Energy instability in Moldova can have a broader impact on neighboring countries and the European energy market. The situation demonstrates how Russia uses energy resources as a political pressure tool, forcing countries to seek independence from its supply.
