Moldova again turns to Russia for diesel fuel, despite political tensions

Moldova has resumed the import of diesel fuel from Russia, the National Energy Regulatory Agency of Moldova notes, reports MoldStreet with reference to RBC-Ukraine.

In the first quarter of 2023, Moldova did not purchase diesel fuel from Moscow, but in the second quarter the country imported a little more than 2 thousand tons, and in the third quarter this figure increased to about 9 thousand tons. Thus, the share of imported diesel from Russia is growing, reaching almost 5% in the third quarter.

Moldova also increased its imports of diesel fuel from Turkey and India, which in turn are major importers of Russian oil. Romania remains the main supplier of fuel to the country, providing 96.5% of gasoline, 71.6% of diesel and 54.5% of liquefied gas.

It is worth noting that this news comes in the context of political tensions between Moldova and Russia. Moldova condemns Russian aggression against Ukraine and imposes sanctions against the Kremlin. Recently, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, revoked the citizenship of the pro-Russian politician Oleksandr Kalinin. There are also reports of attempts by the Kremlin to influence the upcoming elections in Moldova through oligarch Ilan Shor, who has fled the country.
