South Korea has recorded the heaviest November snowfall since records began in 1907. In the capital of the country, the city of Seoul, a record amount of snow fell - 18 centimeters.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), the previous record for November was 12.4 centimeters, set on November 28, 1972.
The snowfall also affected neighboring cities:
- The city of Incheon received 14.8 centimeters of snow, also a record for November.
- In Suwon, 21 centimeters of snow was recorded - the largest amount of November precipitation for the entire time of observations.
The snowfall caused significant infrastructure damage, transport collapse and power outages. As of 18:00 local time:
- 150 flights were canceled at the country's airports, including 71 flights at Incheon International Airport.
- The operation of 89 passenger ferries on 70 routes was suspended.
- Access to 7 national parks is restricted due to hazardous weather conditions.
Heavy snowfall caused numerous road accidents, making it difficult to move around the city and creating a threat for residents.
This weather phenomenon came as a surprise for the country, which rarely experiences such intensity of rainfall in November.
