NATO announced the launch of a new mission called Baltic Sentry, the purpose of which is to ensure the security of infrastructure in the Baltic Sea. The initiative is aimed at strengthening the presence of the Alliance in the region and increasing the level of surveillance of key objects.
Christopher Cavoli, the Supreme Commander of NATO's Joint Forces Europe, will lead the military activity, which will include the participation of frigates, patrol aircraft, maritime drones and other advanced technologies. The NATO Secretary General emphasized the importance of cooperation with infrastructure operators to strengthen the protection of underwater infrastructure facilities.
The decision to launch the mission was announced in Helsinki during a meeting of the heads of state and government of Germany, Denmark, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Sweden and Estonia. The leaders discussed the protection of critical infrastructure in the Baltic Sea, emphasizing the need for decisive action to counter possible threats.
Baltic Sentry is part of NATO's overall strategy to strengthen defense capabilities in the region, given its growing strategic importance.
